Outside Lands 2010

The Outside Lands at the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, California is unfortunately on the wrong coast for mmMix to make it to.  However, the festival has a great lineup, which we wanted to feature here.  We are always happy to oblige fans and provide a sampler.  Enjoy.

Saturday August 14th

Furthur Feat. Phil Lesh & Bob Weir: Truckin

Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, formerly of the Grateful Dead, joined together to found Furthur in 2009.  No surprises here in what they will be playing.

The Strokes: 12:51

A mmMix fav, and one of the concerts still on my list to do before I die.

My Morning Jacket: Touch Me I’m Going to Scream, (Part 2)

Gogol Bordello: Start Wearing Purple

Cat Power: Sea of Love

Cat Power is a notoriously unreliable performer.  She walks off stage if you look at her wrong.  I would love to see how she performs under this kind of pressure.

Wolfmother: Joker and the Thief

This song really does kick ass.

Bassnectar: Blow

I don’t have the proper stereo to fully appreciate what is going on here.  I bet it will blow you away live though, literally.

Pretty Lights: Finally Moving

Tokyo Police Club: Your English Is Good

These guys are cheerfully Canadian, the video is as well.

Beats Antique: The Lantern

You absolutely have to watch this video.  One word, horses.

Rebirth Brass Band: Do watch wanna

This is incredible.

Wild Beasts: Hooting and Howling

These guys are good, my find so far of this sampler.

Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars: Living Like a Refugee (Is not Easy)

Langhorne Slim: I love you, but Goodbye

People Under the Stairs: The Wiz

The Pimps of Joytime: Bonita

Electric Six: Infected Girls

These guys are grimy, in a good way.

Dawes: When My Time Comes

Freelance Whales: Hannah

The Whigs: Right Hand on My Heart

This song will sound familiar to you.

Sunday August 15th

Kings of Leon: Fans

One of my faves.

Phoenix: Second to None

A fun throwback.

Social Distortion: Story of My Life

Al Green: I’m so Tired of Being Alone

Slightly Stoopid: Wiseman

2010 Virgin Mobile FreeFest

Earlier this week, Sir Richard Branson announced the line-up of the 2010 Virgin Mobile FreeFest.  We here at mmMix thought we would give you a quick sampler list in preparation for the Virgin Mobile Festival, you know… a little reconnoiter of the line-up.

Madison and I plan to attend in full party gear and we hope to see everyone there.  Tickets are free and will be available this Saturday the 24th at 10 am from TicketFly.  The tickets go quick, last year they went in 20 minutes, so be prompt on Saturday morning and be prepared to hit the refresh button.

As with all of our mixtapes, listen to the entire list here.

Paper Planes : M.I.A.

Honestly, what other song do you want to hear from M.I.A.?  Everyone prepare your pistol hands.

All My Friends: LCD Soundsystem

I can’t wait for this one.  When I remember a montage of fun things from last summer, this song is playing in the background.

Cut Your Hair : Pavement

Pavement is more Madison’s wheelhouse.

Live Your Life (Feat. Rihanna) : T.I.

I am picking this one for your listening pleasure mainly because of its appearance in The Hangover.

Southern Hospitality ft. Pharrell : Ludacris

Luda!!!!!!!

Bad Reputation : Joan Jett

Ok… I have to admit, I had no idea who Joan Jett was.  Turns out she has a million songs you will know and have heard of.  What this says to me is she had a horrible marketer.  She still rocks either way.

Lebanese Blonde : Thievery Corporation

We totally should have mentioned some Thievery Corporation in our songs without words mixtape.  Anyways, you know this song from Garden State.

Daylight : Matt and Kim

The song was great in the Bacardi commercial and has been a staple for my personal mixtapes.  The music video  for the song is hilarious as well.

Sweetness : Jimmy Eat World

Looking for a sample song for Jimmy Eat World was a walk down memory lane.  These guys released Clarity in 1999.  I will proudly admit I am excited to sing along when they are on stage.

Sweet Disposition : The Temper Trap

You probably first heard this song in (500) Days of Summer.  I recommend checking out the rest of their first album Conditions.

Home : Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros

I have heard this song a ton, turns out it was these guys.  They are a bit off the wall.  Seriously.

Ambling Alp : Yeasayer

I like this one a lot.  Also, I have no idea what is going on in the video.

Fancy Footwork : Chromeo

I have never heard of these guys before but there stuff is unique and surprisingly catchy.

Crown on the Ground : Sleigh Bells

I think this will be great to see live.

Enter the Ninja : Die Antwoord

I have no idea but I certainly appreciate their style.

Black Block : Modeselektor

I hope they play later in the festival.

6669 (I don’t know if you know) : Neon Indian

I like this.  Tell me what you think about this track.

Also check out the video for this particular video.  Some guy put it to a scene from the movie Dark City. The movie is worth a watch.  It has Keifer Sutherland whispering in a loud voice the whole time.

Songs without Words that will Leave you Speechless

In addition to the style of mixtapes my esteemed colleague opened with last week, we will also compile themed tapes.  We plan to have mixes like, “Best Covers”, “Best Remixes”, “Songs to listen to while being chased by the cops”, “Top songs from our Neighbors to the North (Canada)”, “Best Live Versions”, “Songs that have that really really good part” etc.  This week, I present to you “Songs with out words that leave you speechless.”  I apologize, I couldn’t resist the hyperbole but these tracks are good.  They are different styles, some from artists you don’t expect but hopefully you will enjoy it.  Also, if there is a song you think should be in this list, put it in the comments.  I would love to see a collaborative environment here.

And as always, listen to the mixtape here.

Ghostwriter : RJD2

Madison insisted this song be in this list, it is her ring tone and has been since forever.  I obliged but it is grand and indeed belongs here.

North : Phoenix

Awesomeness defined in a song.  As you will find out as we post more tapes, Phoenix is a favorite of ours here at mmMix.  To be honest, I listen to this song constantly and decided to mix this theme just so I could put this song on my first tape.

I know You are, but What am I? : Mogwai

You tell me what you think about this one.  I want the double rainbow guy to listen to this and post a video about it.

East Hastings : Godspeed You! Black Emperor

I am a fan of zombie movies, the new zombies, the fast running zombies.  28 Days Later got me in to fast running zombie movies and besides being a great entertaining movie, it also had a great theme that played through out.  The theme is based on this song by GY!BE.

One more fun fact,  in the movie “Pineapple Express”, Seth Rogen’s character mentions GY!BE in this scene here.  You now get the reference.

Vaka : Sigur Rós

I was reluctant to put any Sigur Rós in this list, not because of the argument that they are singing (they aren’t singing, it is jibberish or ‘vonlenska’, refer to Wikipedia on this one) but because of the criticism I would receive from a certain individual that will remain nameless.

Electric Worm : Beastie Boys

So you may know the Beastie Boys for classics like ‘Intergalactic’ or ‘(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)’.  Those tracks are classics but do not belong in this list.  This one does though.  The Boys of Beastie released this track and others on an instrumental album back in 2007 titled “The Mix-Up”.  I know this sounds cliché but tracks like this really show their diversity as musicians.

Wildcat (aka the Peterman Song) : Ratatat

Not only is this song great but this video is ridiculous.

Over the Pond : The Album Leaf

Yes, I know I am repeating artists a little bit here with the Sigur Rós influence on this track/album however I originally wanted to include “A Short Story” by The Album Leaf however couldn’t find a YT video for it.  Check out both.

Mixtapes! Online.

In college, I had new music all the time.  It was in fact the perfect storm of new music.  I had hours of free time every day, I was surrounded by hipsters and tastemakers and youngsters of every description, and I hated frat house music, so I was forced to seek out greener pastures.  I was also a horrible studier, so any time I sat down to write a paper I was pretty much guaranteed to download three new albums.  Now, I am old.  And busy.  And surrounded by the old white people I work with.  And I can’t download on my work computer.  And I NEVER have new music anymore.

This blog is intended to remedy this situation.  Michael and I are going to post playlists each week.  These will hopefully force us to try to find new music, and think more creatively about the music that we already have.  I also plan to just generally run my mouth about whatever I happen to think about whatever I happen to hear.

This is my very first playlist, an introduction of sorts to my musical history.  These are my top 18 songs.  They are songs that I could not live without, that have changed my musical outlook in some way, or that are really really good.  This is a playlist that I could listen to on a loop for a very very long time without a single skip.

In the Mouth a Desert: Pavement- Slanted and Enchanted

I so badly want to see the reunion tour.

Cheated Hearts: Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Show your Bones
Honorable Mention: Y Control, Maps

The Bucket: Kings of Leon- Aha Shake Heartbreak

Long Distance Call: Phoenix- Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Honorable Mention: Consolation Prizes, Girlfriend

Did you know Paramore covered this song on Canadian TV?  It’s pretty horrible.

High and Dry: Radiohead- The Bends

I’ve always been a Bends kind of girl.

Untitled: Interpol- Turn on the Bright Lights
Honorable Mention: NYC, Evil, C’mere

Someday: The Strokes- Is This It
Honorable Mention: You Only Live Once, What Ever Happened?, Soma

The Execution of All Things: Rilo Kiley- The Execution of All Things
Honorable Mention: Portions for Foxes, Money Maker, Breakin’ Up, Pictures of Success

Skinny Love: Bon Iver- For Emma, Forever Ago

Cigarettes, Wedding Bands: Band of Horses- Cease to Begin
Honorable Mention: Marry Song, The Funeral, The General Specific

The Sound of Settling: Death Cab for Cutie- Transatlantacism

Yes, I know it’s lame, but I don’t care.

I Feel it All: Feist- The Reminder

Stuck Between Stations: The Hold Steady- Boys and Girls in America

Lord knows I’m a sucker for a concept album, and that’s all these guys put out.

Missed the Boat: Modest Mouse- We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank

All the Wine: The National- Alligator

You Got Yr Cherry Bomb: Spoon- Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

A Shot in the Arm: Wilco- Summerteeth

Come Pick Me Up: Ryan Adams- Heartbreaker
Honorable Mention: To Be Young, Firecracker
